Spike & Sweetie...so in love!

« on: April 01, 2009, 01:46:26 PM »

My beardie has been laying eggs in a weird pattern.  She laid one on 3/14, two on 3/16, one on 3/17, two on 3/18, 28 were laid on 3/25, and then yesterday she laid 6 more.  I had put her in a lay bin before she started laying but she FREAKED out.  She was not interested in digging like she had been doing in her tank, all she wanted to do was get out of it.  She would stand on her hind legs and scratch and scratch and scratch the sides of the lay bin.  Then she would just stand there, on her hind legs looking up.  This went on for 2 days.  As soon as I put her back in her tank it was egg city!  Is this normal?  Some of the eggs she laid earlier are only half the size of the 6 she laid yesterday!  There are also some that are almost a greyish color, but plump.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like she's stressing inside the laybox.  Try taking a smaller sterilite that she can get in and out of and placing it inside her enclosure with the proper lay substrate.  The conditions being unchanged could help.

Also, sometimes a heating pad under neath the lay box promotes digging and eases stress.

I am definately worried about her getting egg bound with the way she seems to go about laying.  I keep watching for the signs, but so far she seems o.k.  What about the color of the eggs?  I know they are supposed to be white, but some in the last 6 she laid are almost a greyish color.  I've read how to candle the eggs, and I've also read that eggs have hatched that didn't look like they would due to color, mold, etc.  Does anyone else have experience with eggs being grey?  Those are the ones that were huge that she just laid.
