hey i'm new to this so give me a chance
I have a bearded dragon (obviously :p) he is almost 10inches long and i have today started him on sand in his Dragon Lair lol
when he first went into his lair he started eating the sand. he only did this a few times that i have seen but i was wondering if he is going to be okay if he persists on eating it.
When he started eating it i was stopping him but i can't be watching him 24/7.
i bought the sand from a good reptile store so i happy it is good stuff but i want to be assured.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanx

I'm sorry to tell you this but sand is probally the worse substraite to use I would suggest you remove it. Check out the ongoing discussion at http://bearded-dragons.com/boards/index.php/topic,6.0.html

Any time your dragon is ingesting the substrate it is a serious issue. Think about it, he poops in it then ingests it? Sand is not digestible and will cause serious health issues. In my opinion no particulate substrate should be used, you are much better off with a solid substrate like ceramic tiles.

I myself in person use sand, but my bd is not eating it.
I say remove the sand and you could replace it with some soft, chipped pine.
Tiles and reptile carpet are safe options too.
Reptile carpet shouldn't be used though cause it will soak up poops, same as porous tiles, although the other tiles may be uncomfortable in many ways-so the ideal is to have maybe soft, chipped pine in some parts of the tank/enclosure/aquarrium and tiles in other parts and maybe some shredded newspaper in some areas aswel.
Remember to use things like; logs and sandstone huts, just things they can get under, climb and feel cosy and safe in.
This is just uccording to my study of bds and what i think, but this addvice should not be a source of information taken for all beardie hobbiests as this may only work for some.
Hope this helps

Yeah any kind of wood chip is a very bad idea but Pine in particular would be very bad because of the oil it contains which is toxic to reptiles.

Well like i said, that was just my opinion.
That's why i join forums-so i can learn about beardies, different conversation helps me learn what's best and what's outdated and wrong, now i know that, i will not suggest it again.
