another baby for me to spoil

« on: January 05, 2012, 03:05:55 PM »

im thinking of getting a couple of female leopard geckos but frankly the stores dont seem to have a clue and the books all seem to contradict each other but i know some of you have them so im wanting to know more about your set ups size heats decorations substrate the whole lot

i was looking at a tank 3ft by 1ft by 1ft high so 3ft square floor space but then thought a 2ft by 2ft by 1ft high size tank would fit the space i have better and more floor space but are they even the right sizes for 2 females and am i ok to keep 2 together most stores and books seem to say calci sand as a substrate but is that ok or are they prone to impactation like dragons way too many questions and i refuse to buy without a correct setup and proper knowledge from people who know

lol.. Darlin I have 6 female geckos in a 55 gallon tank.. which is 4'l by 18" h by 12" w... That will be a wonderful enclosure for only 2 !

Also, they are nocturnal so a black light will aid you in seeing them when they are most active.
Temps should be in the 80's low in the 70's.  They don't need uvb, but do need calcium.  Keep a bowl of mealworms on hand daily, and fresh water.. Other than that a dry hide and a damp hide and you are all set !  Good luck ! I wanna see pictures when you get all set up please ?

Yes you can use the reds with geckos.. I have a problem with reds myself... hurts my eyes.. but if they don't bother you, go right a head ! Can't wait to see what you come up with !

I did mine with tiles.. again.. don't seal them in.. easier perhaps, but in the long run being able to pull them out and wash them, dry them is far better.
Hope that helps out !

yep wasnt looking forward to sand i hate the stuff texture feel everything makes me cringe so tiles be easier and cheap for me to get i would have grouted them in but if its easier to leave them ungrouted ill do that all i need is a viv and people keep outbidding me its very inconvienient how dare they if i cant get from ebay and i have to buy new i have to wait longer and i hate waiting

Check with yard sales ads too.. Also, some pet stores take in tanks on consignment.. So you can get one of those rather cheap..
Good luck !

Well good luck in finding something that fits your needs.. Now, you can house those two females side by side in 10 gallon tanks.. that is only 24" width wise and leaves enough room for a smaller 5 gallon for one of the trants..Just place some paper between the trant and the closest geck..
Hope that helps .

I have a heat pad, for a 30 gallon under the bottom of my 55.  I also use a ceramic heat element in the Shop fixture.. Just make sure the heat rating is good for the bulb and the fixture..

Hope that helps..
