hallo, i think my bearded dragon has a problem. He is about 1 year old and one week ago he started to avoid eating enough and moving. He has a bright colour on his eyes but they are actually half opened. In addition, he does not eject fecals frequently (about 1-2 times a week). I think this problem exists due to the small amount of food that he consumes because he is probably sick but I am not sure. Maybe this is also a sign of illness. I keep normal all the terrarium conditions (temperature, humidity, baking spot, cleaning etc.) and I dust his food with calcium powder. What I can do now? Can you help me?

Hi there ! Sorry that you are here with such concerns.
He's at the right age to begin Brumation. And this is the right time for most to start slowing down. This is hibernation for reptiles. When was the last time you had a fecal exam done ?
Take a fresh sample (within 24 hours) to your reptile vet, and have them check for parasites. If he's clear, then his health is fine.
At this point, just scale back on the proteins (insects) and feed only the greens. Sometime in the next couple of weeks to a month, he should retreat into his sleeping area, and go down.
He shouldn't lose too much weight, so you'll want to get a good weight on him, before he's fed, and after he passes fecal. If you aren't doing this on a regular basis, I would suggest starting now.. At least that will give you an idea of where he is now, so you'll know how much he'll lose if any, during brumation. Hope this helps!

Thank you very much for your advice!
I have to ask something more. Is it normal for my bearded dragon to have hibernation at 30 celcius degrees (86 fahrenheit degrees)?
Yesterday I had a conversation with a vet and he said that I have to give him vitamins (at gel form) for two days and if it will has not any result, we are going to procced to fecal exam. I have not done fecal exam before.
And something more. He is not eating any greens now, only warms but today in the morning he ate lettuce. Am I going to continue feed him greens?

Let's follow the Vet's advice ... Well yes to the temperature thing.. It's around 90*F in my house now, and well.. one of my 4 is seriously showing signs of going down.. I'll be taking in fecal samples of all 4 of mine in this week just for a check. This will be the 3rd year I've done this.. All but that one are still getting proteins since they haven't shown any signs of slowing down.
Hope this helps.

You should also consider the age of your UVB bulb. When was it last replaced? It's a good idea to read thru the caresheet and if you have any questions, just post them and somebody will get back with you as soon as possible.

Actually this is a good time to look into replacing your uvb, if it is a tube. I replace mine every 5 months as well, and that seems to be very effective.
Hope this helps.
