« on: September 01, 2011, 01:56:02 PM »

when i first got rocky the lady said he was 18mnths old ive had him 3yrs and hes almost 3ft in lenght now but his bahviour has altered

usually hes a lazy kinda guy stays in same sort place chases his locust only if he can be bothered usually not and he waits until they sit on his nose but hes awake and alert watches you moving in the room and responds when i talk to him usually a look taht says what you want me to answer

past couple weeks he doesnt move at all hardly apart from minimul turning he has just finished shedding which has taken twice as long to finish and i had to get his nails clipped at vets because he hasnt been walking to wear them down he spends most of his time asleep hes still poops once a week in bath like he always has hes just much less active than normal and he was very chilled out lazy before

so im wondering was i given the wrong age and hes just now old and tired or is it that theres something wrong with him

hes kept on newspaper and fed with spring greens and butternut squash plus locust altho he never eats salad never has and when he poops theres no undigested locust in it

Sorry to hear about your dragon being lethargic.  Since you've had him for 3 years, does he normally get lethargic for a few months out of the year, or is this the first time?

He could be older, it's hard to say, we really just need to go over your husbandry in details to see if there are any red flags.
Keep in mind that it's very hard to tell if you're doing something wrong, because dragons are remarkably resilient and it can take years sometimes for there to be any noticeable signs of a problem.

I've included husbandry questions below, I've already filled out the questions you've answered and grayed them out.  Please answer the remaining questions as thoroughly as possible.

1. How large is your enclosure (tanks size in gallons or measurement Length x Depth x Height)?
2. What exact brand of UVB source do you have, if any?  Is it a tube, coil, or Mercury Vapor?
    How old is the bulb?
3. How far is the UVB source from the basking spot?
4. How hot is the basking spot in ºF or ºC?
5. What temperature is the cool side?
6. How exactly is this temperature measured (sticker thermometer, digital thermometer with a probe, temp gun, other)?
7. If using a probe, it is placed flush against the basking spot?
8. What live feeders does your dragon get?  How many are offered?  How often are they offered per day / week?
9. What Calcium and/or Vitamin supplements do you use (brand name and product name please)?
10. How often do you dust with calcium or vitamin powder?
11. What exact greens, fruits, or veggies do you feed your dragon?  Does he eat them at all?  Spring Greens and Squash (Does he ever eat the greens at all?
12. Hydration.  Do you mist your dragon, have a water bowl, or soak your dragon in a bath?
13. If you soak your dragon in a bath, how long do you soak for, how often, and what temperature water?
14. What type of substrate do you use (shelf liner, sand, walnut, tiles, newspaper, etc)? Newspaper

Hmm husbandry is spot on.  It may be an issue with lack of greens.  I see that you're in the UK.

See if you can hunt down some "treat" veggies and fruits:

Dandelion greens and/or flowers
Fresh and Ripe Mango or Frozen Mango chunks
Hibiscus flowers (pesticide free)

Dragons usually go nuts for those listed above.

You may want to see how your dragon reacts to some different types of protein.  Try offering slices of hardboiled egg, ground turkey or chicken (boiled and drained), or canned premium chicken.  You can even try premium wet cat food such as Merrick's or Wellness brands (not sure if these brands are available in the UK).

He may eat some of these, but what I'm looking for is a non-live protein that he goes nuts for.  If your dragon does go nuts for any of these you can start adding in a small amount of puréed greens.  Start by mixing in only a small amount of greens and squash, and slowly but surely add more every feeding until it's about 80% greens and 20% protein.  You may find a point that he loses interest, if so try to move your ration back a step and feed that.

Hopefully you'll find a mixable non-live protein so you can get some veggies in him.

Keep in mind that it's possible your dragon is brumating (mild hibernation).  We're having a particularly nasty hurricane / cyclone season and many of us believe that dragons trigger brumation by changes in the atmosphere (such as low pressure systems aka tropical storms).

I hope this helps!
