it looks like residuals.  could be a scratch that's a bit irritated, but your comment indicates it's not blood.
It's definately not rot.  Rot appears nothing like you imagine from the word.
It looks like it's not painful, therefore i would i observe him without treatment.  If he slows in eating, or begins shaking his head, then i'd check it out with the vet.  But I'm fairly sure you'll not find that necessary.

it reminds me of the black stuff that forms on deer and dog and cat teeth... i touched it ( didnt get bit, well done there) ...

greens have this uncanny ability of staining.  especially areas where there has been a scratch, or abraision of some sort.  Micro particles of debri get caught up in a seemily unforseen area and look much worse than they are.
The fact that you were able to touch the area tells me it's not painful.  So if it's not broke, don't fix it.

yeppers.  I should put up new pics.  I think it's been a few years since I've done that.

Hopefully Herc won't lay any more eggs, and this little mark will disolve with time.

i think herc is full of eggs right now though i dont feel anything, she was on food and eating like crazy now she stopped and is nuzzling the walls... oh well

that was ratchet with the mouth thing, he has a hard time eating to begin with, bugs just crawl out of his mouth as he chews...its pitiful
