I have posted on here about my Baby Girl, Lizzie, not eating on her own for 4 months. Been to 2 different vets, they find NO
medicial reason why she has stopped eating. I have been force feeding but she is holding a steady weight now of 535 grams for about 2 months , at the beginning she was 588 grams. I have tried all the different live food execpt the roaches (trying to avoid those), so last week I put a pinkie in her cage, she looked at it for about 4 minutes, they walked over to it and picked it up and ate like normal, my jaw hit the floor, I could hardly believe my eyes. Now to my question, are pinkies safe for dragons? I want to get her another to see if she eats it, but want some advice first. Please give me your thoughts

You've chosen a topic that is highly debatable, but as long as it can be discussed in an adult manner, we'll allow the discussion to continue.  This has nothing to do with the OP, only the topic at hand.

With that said........................
There is a practice by several keepers based on the "natural" order of life as close to what we can obtain in captivity as possible.  I'm sure more of those persons will chime in as well.

The relationship between your dragon and it's protein food is very important.  It is of great importance that heat, UVB exposure and hydration all be within limits to feed pinkies.  Hydration is increased thru salads by using added vegetables that are paletable, but contain a high amount of water.  Temperatures are somewhat on increased side of safe to promote a faster metabolism and aid in digestion.  Adequate UVB exposure enables to animal to process more efficiently the vitamins it drawls from all sources consumed.

Hi Monature

I personally do not feed pinkies to my dragon, Right now. The reason I say right now is, in my opinion, pinkies should only be used as a last resort to aid in fattening up a neglected (not saying yours is) or past sick animal that is low on weight and fat stores.

The pinkies are high in fat and if they are fed often they can cause issues with the dragons liver, but fed as a "booster" to kick start things, in my opinion is not only acceptable but sometimes needed.

Now with that said, if your dragon ate the pinkie  on it's own without it being coxed, it may just be tired of what you feeding it. I know my guy gets in his moods where he wants something different. Usually during these times I buy some horn or silk worms and once he eats those he goes back to his regular eating cycles again.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your input. She just one day about 4 months ago, stopped eating. I am going to order some hornworms
and some roaches. (Foods she has no interest in Crickets which was  her favorite, superworms, butterworms, reptiworms)
But she also use to eat her greens, wont even look at her salad bowl). I mean she is still very healthy looking, but it is driving me crazy as to why, you just dont stop eating for no reason. My babies are very spoiled, and I want her eating again.

what about her UVB?

What type of bulb are you using....Coil, linear, MVB?

When was the last time you changed it?

Until I moved to the repti-sun linear Tubes I had some issue where my guy would stop eating. It was due to insuffcient UVB.

Im sorry to hear that she is being so picky.

I try to take care of my forum members, so if you are in the continental US(not florida), I can send you a couple roaches for free, all you have to do is pay actual shipping cost, and see if she will eat some of them.  If she likes it I recommend my site  Wink if she's still stubborn hopefully hornworms will help.

Love the offer NO shipping in June, thanks. I will let you know how she does. keep your fingers crossed.
