Its been months since I last came on but I feel that it's really important that I tell my story.

George (my female bearded dragon) laid infertile eggs a month or so ago. I thought it was great and exciting even though I knew there were no babies to be had from them it was cool anyway. A week or so later I noticed she'd lost the use of her back legs. My boyfrend looked it up on the internet for me and people said it was normal after laying eggs so I waited a few days before taking her to the vets. It didn't go away, I took her to the vets and she had to stay in for a week on antibiotics to help the swelling go down. Her ovaries were seriously inflamed and my vet said it was most likely the cause of the swelling of the knees/legs. When I got her home I had to give her marbocyl daily (and worm her) and she had to have injections every 3 days which I started to do myself. Her legs were getting better and she was running around and eating normally and seemed very happy but I noticed a scab on her which looked like a bit of shed that hadnt come off.

I took her back to the vets who pulled it off - this didn't look pretty. He felt her ovaries which were still very swollen and he told me they need to come out. I'd already spent £400 including meds etc up until this point, and this was gonna cost another £200. But she is so worth it if it meant getting her better.

He operated on her today and I got the call about an hour ago. Her ovaries were so diseased an abcess had grown on each one which was protruding through her skin causing that scab! They were growing onto her lung so she now only has use of one lung. He had to remove a part of her liver as well. It was one of the worst cases he had seen. I am absolutely devastated. The next 48 hours are critical. She might not make it.

You never think it's going to happen to you! She wasn't even being bred and this happened! So i just wanted to let people know that this can happen! Breeding might seem like a good idea but you have to be prepared what it can do to your beloved pet. I'm not bothered about how much it's cost. I just don't want her to die and the thought of it is devastating!

I'll keep you all updated anyway Sad

I'm so sorry this is happening to her!
To my knowledge sometimes it's caused by over stimulation of a hormone.  That's not saying a male had anything to do with it.  Females tend to have a supply all their own.
Here's to hoping she pulls thru this with a ferocious appetite.

And for the record, when females loose control of their back legs during the lay process, it's a bad indicator.

You can build a Crossfire style enclosure if you have or can borrow some tools.  Not sure what the pricing is these days, but about 3 years ago you could build one for under $150

I'm really not sure why I posted that in this thread.  I must have had multiple threads open and accidentally posted to the wrong one.  Oops Smiley
