Hey all,
Today I went down to my local PetSmart to pick up some crickets. I generally avoid going to PetSmarts and PetCo's because its always so depressing to see the animals, particularly the reptiles but when I saw the way the beardies where being kept I went off. Angry It was a tank too small for a single baby beardie let alone two! It was sickening, they looked lethargic and ill. One of them that I saw will be dead within two days, if not less :'(. In the enclosure below I saw a bigger tank, still not big enough for the amount they where keeping but still more suitable. This tank had FROGS in it! If you know anything about frogs its that they just sit in one spot all day, unless they have to eat so they don't need that much space. I found an associate and told her that this is unacceptable and she said that its not her call but her Managers call, and this is what he wants. I got to speaking with her and found out that they also had a whole bunch in the "Sick Room" in the back that where all ill as well! One of them had a broken tail and the others where just sick looking.

I payed for the crickets and left, went to their website and called their customer service number. I spoke to a lady and told her what I had witnessed, she (of-course) apologized over and over and said that she would be filing a report and a solution would be assessed within three days and that I would receive a call back. Thats what I love about these companies, they don't give a crap about their animals but a single customer calls in angry and they are ready to jump through just about any hoop you hold out. But I told her that I would give them the three days before I reported them to the Michigan Humane Society and PETA.

And so the count down begins. I will be going there daily to inquire on the dragons. They don't know if they don't know me, I'll tell you that.

I'm glad that you reported them but please please please leave PETA out of this. They aren't as angelic as they may seem in terms of helping animals. A lot of times it's these animals rights groups that get things like HR669 going

Oh I know the evils of PETA, most of the lab animals in their "care" end up dead by their hands, savagery! It was an empty threat but a good threat none the less.

I just got back from my local Petsmart which is much the same way. I actually picked up one of their BD care sheets (the free ones) and just about all the information on the pamplet is WRONG. (They tell you to use sand as substrate!) I commend you for stepping up!

I've been in many petstores around the country and I've yet to see a chain store take perfect care of their reptiles. Some come pretty close - my local petsmart keeps them on carpet and has UVB for them, but temps are still seriously lacking, along with diet - but none that I've seen are perfect.

Both my beardies are from Petsmart.. There housing was ok but there was about 5 of them in the tank. Thats normal for very young dragons but the ones in the tank were around 6 months old. I noticed a lot of nipped off tails and toes and they were only fed lettuce in terms of veggies. The temps were off and the care sheet was not great. I was told a lot of bad info and sold a lot of stuff I no longer use. I understand it's a business and there are always cheaper alternatives, but being a pet store the animals needs should be better taken care of for sure!

Loving my Boogie and Tessie

I have been in several petsmart with similar issues.  However, my petsmart does a pretty good job.  I have never seen more than 3 in a cage.  I questioned them on there husbandry and they were OK.  Since then they have put some money into their reptile area.  I am wondering if they are a franchise or does it come down to the employee?  This one girl has been there for years.
