Digging but damaging claws

Hello, I used to be a member years ago but guess I got deleted. Anyways my female was laying eggs last year and did alot of digging, to the point her claws were very short.
After a few years theyve grown back and shes going through the motions of laying eggs again. She started digging in her sand box the day after mating and again shes wearing down her claws to dangerous levels.
Her sand box is cardboard 6 inches by 12 inches (approx) and is about 3 inches deep with sand. Is there anything I do to the box to help stop the damage? I thought maybe a plastic cat litter tray instead of cardboard but not really sure.
Any help would be great, Terry.

Try giving her a deeper container to dig in. My 2 adult girls that lay won't lay in anything less than about 12" deep.
