so i went to the pet store 2 days ago and got 10 doz large crix. i get home, put them in the keeper and wow, it really didn't look like 10 doz. needless to say, he ate most of them for supper that night and finished them off for lunch the next day. so yesterday i go back to the pet shop and ordered 10 more doz. i tell the lady about what happened, who happened to be the manager, and told her that i must have been jipped. she started making excuse after excuse. so i then began to say that i was looking into ordering them online. she then proceeded to tell me what a pain it is ordering them and how most of them are dead by the time they get to you, nice huh? then she started to say how it's possible he could be eating that many now and that i should think about pinkies. my jaw dropped. needless to say im keeping on my boyfriends tail about ordering them online. im so sick of the pet store hassle and fight to get what you pay for. not only that but i've learned soooo much from this community that i really felt like she was trying to patronize me. "well maybe you need to offer more greens" "he needs to start eating pinkies" "if you don't get them home right away most of them die from being eatten by the other"...ugh!! i've been doing this part of it, i KNOW what im talking about lady!
now heres my question, i HATE bugs!! i truly HATE them. i can only deal with the crix cuz i found ways of doing it w/o touching them AT ALL!! i was possibly thinking roaches because what i hate more about bugs, is the smell of the crix. and if i start ordering them online, thats going to be like 100x the smell. so im asking, what do you people prefer, how do you handle them, is there a way i can do this w/o touching either of them? lol ick yuck blah

Amber, some roaches look more like beetles than roaches. Maybe that would help you get used to having them? You can follow the same procedures with them as you do for crickets, so you wouldn't have to touch them. I'd suggest dubias - they look less like a house roach and they don't climb or fly.

alex,, i think i read that we're not allowed locust? which from the sound of it, thats probably the way i would go too. tito has become a lazy guy so with the moving slower, he may have eaten them without me flinging them toward him lol. cost wouldn't bother me one bit if it meant that stink wasn't around me house!! lol yuck! and i've only dealt with 10 doz at a time, the next day whew!!! let me tell ya, yuck.
crystal,, no climbing? no flying?,, wow, i think you might have me sold on them. i guess my boyfriend is just worried because "roach". we did have roaches at one point, and yuck!! it took forever to get rid of them too! but if they don't climb or fly, we shouldn't have a problem. how often do you have to clean the tub they're in? right now with the crix i clean out the keeper before i restock it, which is every 2 or 3 days. but with buying bulk i won't be restocking as often.

I keep lobster and turkish roaches and I have a huge colony. I usually only clean their bin once a month - more if I have a population explosion. Feeder roaches are tropical insects, so they're not going to infest your home even if one or two manage to escape. I usually find them dead or close to it a couple days after they escape.

Hope that helps ! Janie
