Nope, they are simple mutations within the same species.  The same as a basket ball player and a little person are the same species, but a little person has the mutation dwarfism.  The key is, can they interbreed.  A horse and a donkey always produces a sterile mule, it is an unsuccessful mating.  But if you bred a Clids mare to a mini stud, you'd get a perfect little pony.

Is it not possible to tell a color mutation at a glance in BD's?

the only thing you can tell with dragons of color morphs are just that they are a red, yellow or orange phase..so many breeders use morphs as a signature of their breeding and a way to up the price tag and nothing more...honestly they are just different color phases with a ton of different names for the same things

what exactly is a color phase?  it is literally just a phase that will change?  Again, to use horses... there are truly no white horses.  Most white horses started off a dark color and 'grayed' over the years until they were white.  Any gray horse you see is just on it's way to being white.

a color phase is simply

red phase = red dragon
yellow phase = yellow dragon
orange phase = orange dragon
normal phase = gray/brown/beige dragon

They are not truly white.  Cremellos are genetically the regular black or red base that all horses are, except they have two copies of the dilute gene making them super pale.  But I agree, up close and personal, their looks are an acquired taste.
