Loving my Boogie and Tessie

« on: March 05, 2010, 09:49:52 PM »

Boogie has too much coccilia (not sure if that is spelled right.) and the herb vet gave him .5 ml of albon suspension.  Also Tessie has pin worms and so they are giving both Tessie and Boogie pancur for four days and to repeat in ten days.  Just checking with you guys to get your opinions of the medicines.  Anything I should look out for or should do to help them.

Thanks For the Info.

With the albon you're going to need a probiotic. You can get the liquid variety from the beautiful dragons site or you can get a human grade soy based probiotic from most health stores - riteaid has it in the GNC area. Albon tends to wipe out the good bacteria in their system, and a probiotic restores it. Give it at the same time as the albon, and continue it for about a week after the last dose of albon. What was Boogies coccidia count?
Did Boogie have a positive result for the pinworms? If not, personally, I wouldn't treat him for them. Panacur is gentle compared to most of the meds out there, but he's already going to be on a rather harsh one for the coccidia. I wouldn't want to treat for something he doesn't have.
Soak both of them more often. Meds tend to dehydrate. Don't be too surprised if their appetites slack off, or Boogie may actually stop eating - the probiotic will decrease the chances of it though.

Both of my little ones get a 10 minute every day and every other day the get a 20 minute soak.  I don't know the count but I can call on Monday.  I have both a health food store and rite aid.  I will go get it this morning.  When do you think I should give it to him?  Morning or at night?  I think they wanted to give them both Pancur because they are in the same room and I handle them both.  I am pretty sure they said only Tessie has them.  Boogies eating has already slowed down.  I have been running fecals in for the last two weeks to see if his body would naturally lower the coccidia.  He weights 554 grams.  He lost about 3 grams in this period.  Well it is 8:00 here so I am going to get dressed and run to get this stuff.

Thanks.

Oh Crystal I forgot to ask what is the dosage?  Is it the same as the Albon?

With human grade soy probiotics, I crush one tablet into about an ounce of water and give them a full syringe of it once a day. It's best for him to have heat after taking the probiotic, to help him process it better - so I'd give it to him early in the day.

It took me forever to find this stuff locally.  I found "New Chapter Organics"  With wholefood - live probiotics.  "Probiotic all flora"

It states:

Live probiotics for optimal digestive and immune system function.

nine live probiotic strains delivered in organic whole food media

Organic apples and Organic Jerusalem Artichoke inulin (tuber) provide prebiotic nourishment to enhance probiotic benefits

Non-dairy base

1 tsp contains:

organic fermented soy  1500mg
organic Jerusalem artichoke  250 mg
Organic apple 180 mg
Proprietary probiotic blend

Other ingredients: organic rice flour and organic soy lecithin

Contains fermented soy and soy
Naturally gluten free

This is a powder.

Do you think it is OK?

After a bit do you think Boogie will be more hungry?

That one will work fine Sue. It will help Boogie to get his appetite back, but it usually takes a bit of time. Just keep giving it to him daily and make sure he's nice and warm after he takes it. The heat will help his body process it.

Great.  I really appreciate it.  I mixed a 1/4 of a teaspoon of the powder and made a full syringe and gave it to him.  After that I gave him his first dose of his meds.  He actually ate more this evening than he has.  so hopefully he will be all better soon.  I am waiting to give him the pancur until I verify if he really needs it or not tomorrow.

Thanks again.

OK getting worried.  I have been giving Boogie the medicine for a few days and he only at a few supers the first day.  He eats his veggies on and off but not much.  He won't touch any protein unless it is silks and then only a couple.  I ran out of silks and I am expecting the mid next week.  He has not lost any real weight but should I be doing anything else for him?

Also feeling really bad because every time I give him his meds he get so mad and turns totally black all down his throat and neck.

Poor baby Sad Albon can be pretty harsh on them and make them lose their appetite. All you can really do is make sure to keep him well hydrated, keep giving him the probiotic, and keep his belly warm. Try warming a rice bag for him to bask on.
Rice bag : Fill an old sock half way with regular white rice (not minute rice) and tie the top to keep the rice in. Toss it in the microwave for a couple minutes. Then you can lay a soft cloth over it and let him lay on it. When Calida was sick she got so used to sleeping on the rice bag that she absolutely must have one every night now or she won't settle down to sleep. It helps to keep their tummy warm to process the probiotic while they're sleeping.
