Slave to Altair's Well Being...

« on: August 02, 2009, 10:05:39 PM »

Hiya folks,

I'm new to the forums, and a brand spanking new beardie owner. Oh how I've missed having a lizard, and love my little guy (though possibly a girl, I'm just used to people referring to lizards as male) already.

Altair is about 6 weeks old, close to 6 inches long currently, and one very spunky lil critter with a habit of basking along the outer edge of his veggie dish.  His momma and poppa are Kuba and Akita, who belong to my friend Amanda and her fiance Dan. It was their first time hatching eggs! I believe (from what I've googled to do with coloring) he's 'normal' and not any fancy color.

He loves getting sprayed (misted) with water, and will actually walk over to it and just look at the nozzle face first and close his eyes. I'm thinking of creating some kind of lagoon for him in the future (once he's bigger and has a bigger cage) because he likes basking semi submerged (one slightly over-misted veggie tray brought this to attention, along with one bath where the water was cooling fast so I secured his basking light over head. he crawled up half onto my hand and just basked for half an hour.... a more contented lizard I have never before witnessed.)

He also loves climbing up the silk plant I have suctioned to the side of his tank, and just lounging on the leaves. bigger tank = I'm gonna get him a hammock. (for the record, he's in a 10 gal tank right now and so far seems to be enjoying it just fine... he was in about the same floor space with two siblings before he came to me)

Altair seems to so far enjoy that he can see the tv, and watches me intently (like right now...) as I'm on the laptop, or walking around, ect. He's ridiculously alert and speedy (especially considering he's 'the fat one' out of the trio of tiny lil critters.) and so far, shows no fear.

Anywho, not sure where to post pictures around here, so after I find that out (or find out like some forums I've been to, you can't post pictures for some length of time) I'll put up some pictures of his new diggs and of his oh so adorable self.

(did I mention the name is Jen? oh. well. hi, name is Jen, nice to meet all of you!  *wink*)

Hi Jen, welcome to the forum!  He sounds adorable and we would love to see pictures.  There is a photo section for you to put your pictures.  Did you check out our caresheet?  It has lots of great info on it.  10 gallon might be small for your little guy, mostly because it is hard to get the temperatures you need.  20 long is the minimum requirement, but you can also put him in the same size you would for an adult and he will grow into it.  It can be divided if it seems to be too much space, but they are usually fine.  Let us know if you have any questions and welcome again.

thankies  Smiley

And yep yep I did check out the care sheet  (as well as about a zillion other ones online)

Pics have been posted already *laughs* it's one of the first things I did.

As for the tank, it's only temporary, and so far, he seems to be enjoying it. climbs on his plant, water rock, and the various rocks I have in it, as well as on his veggie dish. it's a bit on the small side, but for being around 6 inches long, he's still mostly tail.
