I just came into the room having been out it for a few hours to discover one of my two girls (apparently two girls!) has laid eggs! Can this happen? Or Does this mean that the vets and breeder got it wrong the other was male? What size should they be if they are fertile? I read before that a female can lay eggs without ever mating is this true?

I am totally confused! I removed the eggs marked the tops and incubated them just incase I was not prepared for this and was not really researching the topic as I thought this was a few moths away at least! she has just turned 9 months old! Any help anyone can give me would be a huge help I am worried about her and I am wondering if these eggs could be fertile? I am so shocked too so not gonna sleep!!

Hello,

First of all beardies shouldn't be housed together.  Here's a link that shows some of the injuries that can come up:

http://bearded-dragons.com/boards/index.php/topic,16.0.html

Beardies can lay infertile clutches.  Here's some pictures of some fertile eggs:

Having babies hatch and taking care of them is very expensive.  They eat like there's no tomorrow and you need bins, heat lamps, uvb lights.  Notice the plural lol (I had some hatch in September and October).

You should probably also give your female some extra calcium because laying eggs takes a lot out of them.  If you haven't already done so, you should probably read the breeding 101 thread.

I had my two, Kinky and Xena, together because I was misinformed.  When puberty hit them Xena was younger than is wise for a female beardy to lay eggs.  Fortunately she had grown quite a bit and it didn't harm her (visibly).  She was 7 months old when she first laid eggs.

I 2nd that notion of not housing them together, regardless of gender.

In addition to the great info from Alara, yes there have been cases of females laying infertile eggs out of nowhere. But sorry, I wouldn't know if there's a way to check if the eggs are fertile. Good Luck...

Thank you guys thats been helpful. The pictures are really good too. But my eggs are more elongated less circular but the colour is similiar is that unusual? I went and visited a breeder this morning and did some research I have them in an incubator now in vermiculite and have the tempature at 25 degrees celsius which I need to get a bit higher. Being generous with the vitamin and calcium powders for Ronni now and she is eating plenty of crickets.
I am gonna go through the breeding 101 and visit the breeder who gave me the mother so its research and research for the next while.

Also the two beardies do not live together but as I thought they were two girls I let them out together alot and must have missed the dirty  deed!
Thanks again guys!
I am still very shocked! I was ignoring the obvious signs coz TWO vets told me I had two girls!!!
They really are no substitute for people with experience with stuff like this.
Thanks  Smiley

Sounds like the eggs might be infertile if they're not shaped properly.  Although if the colour's good I might be wrong.  Hopefully beardielover17 will come by, she knows how to candle eggs (I can't remember who else knows how) and even has a picture of an egg being candled.  She also has some videos that are interesting to watch.

Hi,

Here is a cool page that shows a candled gecko egg, what you should look for.  Hope this helps.  http://www.milwaukeereptiles.com/eggFertility.php
