Last night Xena laid another 30 infertile eggs.  I'm going to do as ladyknite suggested and let Kinky and Xena mate when I feel the next clutch coming.  Hopefully that will stop the cycle and I won't have to face getting Xena fixed, not because I want more babies out of her but because I don't want her to hurt.

My question is: if some sperm gets by and gets retained would it have an effect on getting spayed?  If the vet doesn't take out all the right parts would that sperm have a harmful effect on her?  Hope that's clear.

You're definately not thinking like a doggie person!  Wink  The answer would be YES and NO.  It's not directly related to the retention of sperm, but in the female herself.  if she were to be spayed the way most reptiles are spayed, the part of the reproductive system that processes fertilization would be removed, but not the chamber eggs are formed in.  (in people lingo.......the ovaries are removed, the womb is left)  This would allow for the formation of eggs, without a way to expell them, therefore requiring more surgery.

Spaying is always a drastic measure, and not one I recommend, unless the direct cause is life threatening such as extreme binding or breach of tract.  We've worked with a few dragons laying infertiles in an attempt to stop them, and mating them seems to be the most natural and effective.  It means that she will stay eggs, probably 1-3 more clutches, and you'll definately have to watch her hydration, fat stores and calcium intake, but the associated risk factors are lower than with infertiles.

That makes the decision easier.  I was contemplating which would give her the best quality of life and was thinking that if the attempt to stop the cycle didn't work I would just let her mate so it's not so hard on her body that laying infertile eggs would be rather than making her go through a lot of pain and risk of a spaying.

The eggs were a solid white so her calcium seems good.  She has good fat stores and hasn't met a bug she doesn't like (she loves the roaches).  She also loves her baths and will often demand another one after she's pooped by poking her nose at the tub and then laying down and making swimming motions.  But of course I'll keep an eye on everything.

I am coming into this late, and I admit I am not at my best till evening, but i noticed you said the eggs where solid white. Are you sure they are infertile? If male and female are left together for even a couple mins thats all it takes.

They've been separated for well over a year now and I don't let them out at the same time.  Except for once but I was holding Xena the entire time and while I think Kinky contemplated trying to climb my legs to get to her he decided not to lol.
