Henry lookin' so cute!

« on: February 03, 2009, 10:37:12 PM »

 Hello again! Ever since I started feeding Henry crickets he isn't touching his greens. I have no idea what he was fed before I got him so I'm not sure what to think/ do. Him wanting only crickets make me lean more towards him being a juvenile. If this is true then it's OK that he is eating mostly protein... Right?
 I just went in and checked on the fresh plate of greens I gave him and it looks like he played in them! I think I am going to get some squash to try tomorrow. Should I cook it or just cut it really small?
 I've been reading about the roaches and I don't think I can raise roaches!! EWWW! Are the silk worms just as good? I ask because I have been stopping after work and getting a few dozen large crickets every night and storing the extras in a coffee can till breakfast. I don't mind doing this but having worms at the house seems a bit easier and they have a smaller EWW factor for me! lol
 I know that seems nuts seeing as how I've been feeding a ball python rats for 2 years but dropping a rat in a feeding cage is so much less icky than having a bucket of roaches around. At least for me! Smiley

Cabbage, Carrots, and Lettuce are not good greens to feed your Dragon. They have little to no nutritional value and/or can be high in oxalates, which would bind Calcium and thus doing more harm to your dragon then good.
Frozen vegetables are no good either, they lose a lot of their nutrional value when frozen. Fresh greens daily is the best way to go (ie. Collard Greens, Endive, Escorale, Mustard Greens)

Here's a great site that many of us use as a guide: http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/Nutrition.html
Green = Best as staple
Black = Occassional treat
And don't even bother with any other color.

Also, Superworms should be fed as a treat and not a staple. They are high in fat and can be addictive.

How old is your beardie? This will help us determine if you are giving your dragon enough protein.
