Armpit lumps By: enigmamachine42 Date: November 14, 2009, 04:14:30 PM
My dragon has soft lumps under his armpits. He has had them for a while and seems otherwise healthy, but looking at other people's pics, I see that they are not normal. He basks, poops mightily, eats about 3-4 adult dubia (calcium dusted and occasionally vitamin dusted) per day, and has grown from 8" on Labor Day to almost 13.75" today. The only behavioral problem he has is that he refuses to eat his veggies. They just dry out in his cage. Anyway, should I be concerned about the lumps? If so, what should I do?

They look like bits of fatty skin in the picture. That can be caused by the dragon not eating enough to maintain a healthy weight. At his age, he should be eating all he wants in 15 minutes at least twice every day. This should equal around 40 or more appropriately sized insects every day, with some dragons eating more than 100 a day. All insects should be smaller than the space between his eyes to avoid choking and impaction risks.

He eats 2-3x daily, and consumes nearly as much food as my 2 new sub-adult dragons do. He looks tubby to me, but I will try to post another pic here tomorrow and see what you think.

3 to 4 roaches a day isn't nearly enough. Adults should still be getting 40 to 50 a week - at 3 or 4 a day he's not even getting that much. Adults are also likely bigger than the space between his eyes.
If he won't eat more, double check your temps. I remember from another thread that he's under a coil UVB too? That desperately needs to be changed asap - that will also affect his appetite. If there's still no improvement in appetite I highly recommend a fecal being done. His head is much bigger than proportion to his body - meaning that he's not reached his growth potential for his age. Temps, UVB, and the amount of protien he gets all come into play.

That was someone else's thread. His dragon is way older than mine and almost 6" shorter. Mine is under a regular (cylindrical) UV lamp. His basking spot is about 110F and 6" from the UV source. Also, I don't have any adults at the moment. My oldest ones are only 9 months. I'm not sure about the age of the one my questions were about, but I estimate that he is 4-5 months. He eats his fill of dubia 3x daily. I plan to buy a scale tomorrow so that I can weigh him and his food to get a better measure of his actual food intake. Since you suggest a fecal, do you suspect parasites? What sort of head-to-body ratio should I be expecting in a healthy dragon at his age?
